Some X users may now have to demonstrate that a person is behind their account before regaining full access. The platform's liveness checks offer device biometrics or short selfie videos when its systems flag apparently automated activity. X acknowledges that ordinary use can trigger a prompt, too. There is no application form for the check and no verification badge awarded for passing it.

First, make sure the request came from the app

X's liveness guidance rules out email, SMS and direct messages as delivery routes for check links. The process belongs in the official app, apart from the documented iOS App Clip used for QR checks. That gives users a specific warning sign: a message demanding an urgent selfie upload does not match these instructions.

The options on one phone may differ from another

Passing one method is enough. The menu can vary by device, app version and region. Hand-motion checking is still marked coming soon, so it is not something every user should expect to find. Before granting camera access, read which method the actual prompt offers.

What each method sends to X

The biometric route and the selfie route handle data differently. Comparing X's descriptions makes the distinction easier to see than calling both a camera check. These are the company's stated arrangements, not findings from an independent test.

Short selfie videoAutomated third-party liveness systemLiveness confidence score; not the video itself.

The third-party step is important. A statement that X does not receive the recording should not be confused with a statement that video never leaves the phone. The local biometric option and the video option are different processes.

A liveness result leaves other questions open

A person can be present without having supplied proof of a named identity. For a documented example of the separate tasks, GOV.UK's published liveness-and-likeness record describes live-presence detection and comparison with an ID photograph. It explains the concepts; it does not establish X's supplier or contractual arrangements.

Government-issued identification and creator-payment requirements sit in X's separate ID-verification policy. A creator should not assume that clearing a liveness prompt also completes that process. A successful check cannot establish that the account's posts are true.

There are consequently three different issues to keep apart. X's Community Notes safeguards address information around posts. Its parody-account naming rules address account presentation. Liveness addresses the person behind the activity. Passing the last of those checks does not settle the other two.
