Reddit is taking its For You and Following feeds to a wider audience. In an October 28 announcement, the company said the two-feed experience would roll out globally over the next few weeks, giving users a visible choice between recommendations and the communities they have already joined.

For You mixes posts from joined communities with suggestions related to a user's interests. Following limits the feed to joined communities. Reddit says the app will return to the feed last viewed when a person next opens it, so trying the discovery stream does not have to become a permanent opening choice.
The change is wider access to an existing experiment
The distinction matters for anyone who has already seen those tabs. Reddit's October 8 changelog described the same split as an experiment available to a small subset of global users on the website, iOS and Android. The October 28 update changes its announced reach to a global rollout over weeks. It does not establish that every account has the new layout today.
Earlier Reddit help instructions explain how to disable home-feed recommendations with a settings toggle. That guidance describes the older home-feed controls. For an account showing the two new tabs, Following is the explicitly documented route to conversations from joined communities.
A membership filter is different from a time sort
A recommendation system predicts what might interest a user. Filtering out unfamiliar communities answers a different question: where may the posts come from? Reddit's announcement promises that narrower source pool in Following; it does not say the tab is an unranked, strictly chronological feed.
This is another approach to feed control alongside Facebook's written feed preferences and YouTube's subscription and custom-feed changes. On Reddit, the immediate decision is simpler: explore recommendations in For You, or return to Following and let the app remember that choice.
