Bluesky wants .bsky to become an internet domain ending, giving its users a possible new address for their online identity. The proposal is an application, not a registration service that people can use now. It comes as ICANN prepares to publish the applications in its latest round of new domain extensions.

A proposed suffix, not an approved launch
Bluesky CEO Toni Schneider disclosed the application in a public post. His example was an address such as alice.bsky, which could also serve as a social handle. He described a possible 18-to-24-month journey if the application succeeds. That is an estimate, with approval still to come, rather than a release date.
ICANN has scheduled its application reveal for October 7 at 18:00 UTC. Publishing the list will identify requests in the new round; it will not mean that all the requested extensions are ready to use. A top-level domain is the final part of a domain name, such as .com or .social.
Domain-based handles already exist on Bluesky
The application is separate from Bluesky's existing custom-handle feature. Users who control a domain can already use it as their username by proving that control. The company's guide explains the DNS record involved and notes that mentions using an old handle still point to the same account.
The address belongs in the social profile discussion
For a creator or business, a recognisable address can help connect a profile with an existing website. It answers a different question from the campaign tools covered in our report on LinkedIn's creator discovery filters: finding an account and recognising who controls it are not the same task.
The distinction is useful when comparing social platforms. Our guide to viewing Instagram profiles anonymously concerns the viewer's visibility; Bluesky's domain handles concern the identity displayed by the account owner. Neither should be mistaken for a promise that every statement on a profile is trustworthy.
There is no .bsky username to reserve through this announcement. The immediate next step is the application reveal, followed by ICANN's process. Until the proposal clears that process, the familiar .bsky.social handles and existing custom domains remain the practical choices.
