Meta says bursts of activity linked to a Claude tool triggered the mistaken suspension of the No Kings Coalition's Instagram account. Its fuller explanation on Sunday followed a disruption during Saturday's early-voting demonstrations. The company acknowledged an error; it did not announce a new restriction on political accounts.

The coalition said its page disappeared for about 90 minutes and that administrators remained locked out after other people could see it again. That gap is important: a restored public profile is not necessarily a restored publishing account.

What Meta says set off the alarm

According to Monday's report from The Economic Times, Meta communications chief Andy Stone said a Claude tool was reading profiles, posts and hashtags at roughly four times the normal rate, in concentrated bursts. Meta's systems treated that pattern as bot traffic.

Stone said an automated review reversed the removal about an hour later, but fixing administrator access took longer. His explanation did not identify the tool's operator. It therefore does not establish that the coalition ran it, or that Anthropic deliberately interfered with the account.

Two checks before calling an account recovered

For a team publishing time-sensitive updates, the incident leaves two separate questions. Can the audience open the profile? Can an authorised administrator sign in and publish? The coalition's account of the interruption shows why checking only the first can give an incomplete picture. This is a distinction drawn from the reported recovery sequence, not a new Instagram recovery procedure.

It also separates account access from other platform decisions. Meta's content-moderation debate needs that distinction, rather than treating every restriction as the same event.
